Google Places and Facebook- You’re Doing Them Wrong

google places guideThe one weird thing about blind spots is this- you don’t see them! Even though you can look day and night, it’s called a blind spot for a reason.

So why am I talking about blind spots? Because every day I see more and more businesses that have blind spots regarding the Internet.

This may seem silly, so let me explain. As you already know, the Internet is very quickly replacing the way that most of us used to do business. Instead of offering a service just to people in your local area, you can now serve the entire world! Instead of having to pay expensive telephone fees to talk to someone in Asia, you can now hop on Skype and talk to them for FREE.

It’s amazing, and it’s only going to keep changing faster and faster. A good business owner has to keep up with these things- otherwise they risk their company getting mauled by the flexible, more adaptable ones.

Well even though a lot of business owners realize this, they still have blind spots. Most of the blind spots that I see these days are not from businesses that never tried- it’s businesses that didn’t realize “try” is different from “succeed”.

You see there are TONS of Facebook fan pages created by businesses. These are from business owners who realize where trends are going and want to stay on top.

The thing is, many of these pages were set up incorrectly! Maybe it doesn’t have a lot of company information on it. Perhaps there are no graphics or images listed. Maybe the information is outdated and pointing customers the wrong way.

You see there’s a lot more to being successful with your fan page than just putting it up. You have to make it look professional, set up marketing campaigns to get new “Likes”, send out regular updates, and a lot of other things. If you’re just letting it sit there without doing anything with it- you’re wrong!

Another example is Google Places. Even though most businesses have created a website or Facebook, most of them have never even looked at Places. I’m not sure why this is the case, but hopefully I can help turn this trend around.

As you already know, there are a few reasons why Places is such an important tool. For one thing, they show up very high in Google’s searches. Something else to consider is that Places makes it very easy for someone to see exactly where your company is in their town.

Now don’t get me wrong with this- I’m not saying that EVERYBODY is doing this wrong. What I am saying is that more and more businesses should start using these tools they have in front of them. Really market with Facebook, don’t just leave the page there.
